Requirements for driver license reinstatement

On Behalf of | Feb 25, 2021 | Driver’s License Suspension |

There are numerous reasons why the court may order a driver’s license suspension. This means that the driver’s license is not in effect for a certain amount of time, and the driver may not operate a vehicle.

Depending on the reason for the suspension, the driver may be able to reinstate the license by following certain requirements.

Reasons for driver license suspension

According to the Official Internet Site of the Florida Legislature, there are a variety of reasons for a driver license suspension. Some examples include:

  • Driving without a license or with a suspended license
  • Failure to follow court’s instruction for a traffic violation
  • Committing a traffic-related felony
  • Failure to complete a required alcohol abuse education program or driver improvement course
  • Failure to pay child support obligation
  • Being a habitual traffic offender

According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, someone may receive a suspension notice if there is no auto insurance or for not fulfilling additional financial responsibilities. There may also be a suspension due to a medical condition that makes it unsafe for someone to drive.

Reinstatement requirements

There are various requirements the driver must meet in order to reinstate a license due to traffic-related suspensions. If there was a suspension due to an unpaid fine, the driver must pay the fine first. For failure to appear at a traffic summons or to complete a court-ordered driver program, the person must contact the traffic court and satisfy all of its requirements.

Obtaining car insurance or catching up with payments or renewing a car registration can result in reinstatement. To reinstate a license due to a medical condition, the person must submit an exam completed by the doctor that states the condition no longer impedes driving. For suspensions due to a DUI or habitual offenders, the driver must wait a certain period of time before license reinstatement, and there may be a requirement for an ignition interlock device or other driving restrictions.

All license reinstatements also require a reinstatement fee.
