Is it best to tell your child about divorce sooner?

On Behalf of | Apr 2, 2021 | Divorce And Separation |

As a parent getting a divorce in the near future, you likely have questions about when and how you should break the news. You may get conflicting information about whether it is better to tell your child sooner or to wait.

The answer is unfortunately not very clear-cut. But you can implement logic from both sides to make a better and more informed decision.

Prepare for the conversation

As stated by Psychology Today, sooner may be better when it comes to breaking news of divorce. However, you should not act in a hasty manner, either. It is important to know what you will say before you go into the conversation. Speculate what questions your child may ask and try to prepare in advance. Decide what you are willing to share and what you will keep from them.

Above all, it is crucial to work together with your co-parent. Do not try to have one-on-one conversations with your child behind their back. Do not deviate from the plan in the middle of your discussion. Your priority should remain working together to provide your child answers and comfort in this difficult time.

Do not put it off

On that note, you should also tell them sooner rather than later. Children need time and space to process potentially traumatic news. No matter how you broach the topic, this news is a form of trauma, as it will deeply uproot their life as they know it. Do not focus on giving them time to enjoy being a “normal family”. Just provide them with the security of knowing they have your love and support throughout the transition.
